Day 16-Eagle Pass, TX-March 31

morning.jpg (13938 bytes) Let's make a run for the border. As we leave town we are curving through some beautiful green mountains. Before long, we are in the flat desert about 1,000 ft up. This may be the longest distance we do in one day, but there isn't much to look at between us and the border on Mexico 57. We set the bikes on 70 and head north. Once again we find that "one way" has different meanings to different people. The car in our lane was evidence of that.

At the border we want to turn in our vehicle papers. The official looks at us like we were the first people to ever want to do this. He says that we must drive 60 miles south to turn in our papers. When we tell him we asked about this at our border crossing he wasn't impressed. Well, we're going home and we'll figure things out later. This is ridiculous.
We stop at the same motel we stayed at on the way out. We exchange our money at a bank. Not all US border banks will do this and ours only does paper money. I give my change to a kid in line. In Mexico we were unable to exchange our pesos for US money. We tried 3 Mexican banks at the border and none would give us US currency

Up the road our van and trailer are fine. We grab it, some fast food, load up the bikes and decompress. Tomorrow we'll start the ride home, but will stop on the way. We are in no hurry.
