Day 13-Patzcuaro, MX-March 28

motel.jpg (24060 bytes) We will begin our climb from the depths of hell today. Step one will be to find breakfast away from the Best? Western. So, we wander up the hill to town looking for the town square. We see it on maps and know it is there. I'm beginning to think that all the one way streets lead away from it. fpatz1.jpg (28508 bytes)
bazaar.jpg (24576 bytes) We can't drive to the square because we are stupid, so we park the bikes hoping we can walk to it. We a stroke of luck we're in the town bazaar and I'll never look at our local grocery chain the same again. This stuff is very fresh and ripe. The cantaloupe smells so good we buy one for later. Just beyond the food vendors is the square and the motel we should have stayed at. For breakfast we have roast shoe leather, but the fresh strawberry jam makes up for it.

church.jpg (23641 bytes) On the square is a converted church that is now a small library. The painting on the back wall dates to the Spanish Conquistadors and is in excellent shape. We could stare at it all day. Out on the square Forrest makes me jealous by having his boots polished for $0.20 US. He says it's payback for having my bike washed in Mazatlan. All I know is that my boots are at the Best? Western and his are shiny. To get even, I take him down a dirt road, but his boots still look good.

ruin5.jpg (16717 bytes) We head to the ruins at Tzintzuntan, the place of the hummingbirds. These ruins date to the 12th century and were the home of the Tarascans, who were a very powerful group of united tribes. They were so powerful that they defeated the Aztecs. There are still almost 100,000 living Tarascans.

fpatz3.jpg (16707 bytes) We head back to town for some R&R. On the way we check out the ferry to the island city, Janitzio, in the middle of the lake, but elect to not go. Once again, some things are best viewed from a distance. We don't want to ruin this picturesque image. lakeisland.jpg (17515 bytes)
Like idiots, we have dinner again at the Best? Western. Ordering off the menu was no better, but the poor service makes the food look good. Oh well.
