Day 7-Top of the Rockies Rally

In Estes Park I heard wolves howling in the morning. At rallies it sounds like someone is trying to hack up a hair ball. These are different animals with different problems.

The Top of the Rockies Rally is great and I elect to do a minimum of riding. I elect to spend some time with friends. Rick clearly has stolen my t-shirt as it matches my bike perfectly. I've been on the majority of these roads before, dirt and asphalt and would rather veg out.

In the morning the local fire fighters stuffed us with pancakes, which was part of the registration fee. At night we are served a dinner, again part of the fee. This is a well organized affair that moves a long line through quickly. For lunch, you're on your own, but who can move after breakfast anyway.

I have an HID headlight installed by Motolights. This is the same type of light that is on the higher end BMW autos and has a blue tint to it. The bulb should last 10 times as long as the stock bulb and has over three times the candlepower. Whereas the 910 PIAAs have great distance illumination, the HID offers very good fill qualities.

During the day the field events draw a big crowd. It's clear that one show-off on a GS-Adventure clearly didn't get enough attention as a child. He tries to steal the show, but makes more of a fool of himself. The highlight is the dog on the motorcycle for the hotdog eating contest. This little guy was shocked to find food hanging from a rope strung over his head.

At night a couple of bands entertain us. The first band has decent talent and great energy while playing a rock/blues combination. The second group has great talent, but are overshadowed by the lead singer. She makes it clear that this is her band. Her voice and style have a Stevie Nicks quality, but there's no heart in her singing. The real talent is with the lead guitarist. The two bands make for an awesome amount of entertainment. All in all, with camping, food and entertainment, this is a lot of bang for your buck.

One of my pet peeves is the predominance of cigar smokers at motorcycle rallies. I don't understand the connection. Is it a macho thing? In my opinion, it is a very obtrusive and rude habit which prevents non-smokers from enjoying the rally. I don't mind if it's done in certain areas that I can avoid, like around a guys campsite. What does bother me is when you are surrounded by it at field events and the such, where your only choice is to either bear with it or miss the event. With the taste of smoke in my mouth and it's smell on my clothes, it's time for sleep.
